About Us

History

Mr. Lim Eng Keat together with his siblings started the business soon after Malaysia gained independence from the British in 1957. The business name then was Ka Oon.

Being one of the pioneers in the confectionery industry in Penang, Ka Oon began its humble beginnings with a road-side stall selling sundries, home-baked breads, cakes, and puffs. Through hard work and perseverance, the business thrived and soon grew to a fleet of several vans, further expanding the areas of coverage the business was able to reach. Ka Oon then secured the distributorship of the-then-popular Sunshine bread in the 70s and pioneered in homemade kaya sales.

Soon after, Ka Oon changed its name by adding the word “Sin” which means “New Ka Oon” in hokkien dialect.

It was also during that era that Sin Ka Oon acquired a shoplot at the present location. Today, Sin Ka Oon has expanded to occupy 3 units of shoplot along Jalan Paya Terubong in Air Itam.

Currently, the business is managed by the second generation of the Lim family. Manned by more than 20 employees from different races and background, the business is able to serve its customers everyday throughout the year except for the first three days of Chinese New Year.

Specialties

Sin Ka Oon remains only one of handful cake shops in Penang that specializes in 3D cakes, namely figurines, wedding, tiered, and fondant. The cake shop also offers a variety of cheese and tiramisu cakes. All these cakes use only pure mascarpone cheese and coffee liqueur instead of pre-mixes as ingredients.

In addition, Sin Ka Oon also offers specially-made cookies such as special full moon cookies, special themed cookies, and modern full-moon packages.
